| THERE WAS A TIME There was a time when policemen lived among us to protect and serve and not to monitor and punish. There was a time when a man could join a company, make his way to the top with hard work and ingenuity, and not have to worry about being replaced by his boss’s fraternity brother. There was a time when your television could be repaired. There was a time when knowledge and no degree got you father than an imbecile who happens to have a degree but neglected to gather the knowledge. There was a time when football, basketball, and baseball players earned an honest wage. There was a time when a jury rendered a verdict based on innocence or guilt defined by the letter of the law rather than racial revenge. (Although I have to admit this happened only in the late fifties to early seventies.) There was a time when a person was responsible for his actions rather than the manufacture of whatever personal vise or possession he managed to abuse and thus causes himself bodily harm. There was a time when any man could become president despite the size of his pocketbook. There was a time when a penny could buy you something. There was a time when ministers, rabies, and priests could be trusted with our sons and daughters. There was a time when fireworks, guns, tobacco, and alcohol were things you could purchase and not be seen by the GREENS AND THE MAD MOTHERS as a Stone Age buffoon but rather a man full of life who loved his American heritage. |
